Renewable energy sources accounted for 58% of electricity consumption in Germany in the first half of 2026, an increase of nearly 3 percentage points on the same period last year and a record, said the ZSW research center and BDEW association on Wednesday.
- In total, renewable energy plants generated 152.2 billion kilowatt hours of electricity from January through June
- The rise is primarily due to higher electricity generation from onshore (+7%) and offshore (+28.3%) wind energy
- Photovoltaics-produced electricity was also slightly higher, up 3.7%
- Hydropower generation decreased by 7.7% due to lower precipitation
- Generation from biomass remained virtually unchanged, with an increase of 0.6%
